Dog owner to pay RSPCA $86,790
05.06.08
Patrick Franklin Doran says he will start buying cats after yesterday losing his court case against the RSPCA and being banned from owning a dog for three years.
The 65-year-old pensioner was found guilty of not providing adequate food, water, accommodation and veterinary treatment for 67 chihuahuas and was ordered to pay the RSPCA $86,790 in compensation.
Doran was also ordered to pay a $4000 fine plus an extra $800 in court costs and compensation.
After leaving the Maryborough Magistrates Court yesterday, Doran tried to hide from reporters and on his way to his car called the RSPCA inspectors a "bunch of a***holes".
"I wasn't cruel," he said. "When they (RSPCA) came to my house they kicked over all the f***ing water bowls."
When asked how he felt about not being allowed to own a dog, Doran said he would "own cats now".
The chihuahuas were seized from Doran's Glenbar property, about 40km south-west of Maryborough, on August 30 last year.
During the two-day trial which started in March and was adjourned to this week, three RSPCA inspectors told the court of the "squalid" living conditions the 67 chihuahuas were subjected to.
RSPCA Inspector Graham Crowden said he was "ecstatic" about the outcome.
